Barbara Lember, from age 4 through her teen years, studied dance and performed improvisation and Wigman-based technique with Hedy Tower. While attending the Philadelphia Museum College of Art (now University of the Arts), Barbara joined the Graham-based Terez Nelson Dance Company. She performed as a lead dancer for eight years. During this time she also studied at the Martha Graham School in New York City. She then joined and performed with Gruppe Motion Berlin (now known as Group Motion Dance Company) under the direction of Helmut Fricke Gottschild, Brigitta Herman and Manfred Fischbeck. In addition to participating in individual workshops and classes, Barbara has studied Pilates with Karen Carlson for many years.
Ms. Lember has taught modern dance for over 30 years at a variety institutions, including Bryn Mawr College (1968-77), local art centers and for individual clients. She developed and teaches Form & Function, a program that incorporates both Pilates mat work and modern dance. Barbara teaches the Adult/Modern classes for JRD at the Performance Garage.
